Against the US monopoly over the internet

As a follow up on Scott's post on the control over the internet, check out the recent number of Le Monde Diplomatique; where Ignacio Ramonet, the chief editorialist, called for placing the "control" over the internet in the hands of the UN (the article is in French). The argument quoted in Scott's post says that in order to safeguard efficiency of the internet it would be a grave mistake to place it under the control of the UN, on the other hand the Economist, does not seem very worried over the possible political control over the internet by the US, since until now political abuse of the internet by the US, did not take place. But there was not really a need for that yet, a devil's advocate might say.
